Cooperative Housing for independent living in old age

The new building ensemble for GEWONA NORD-WEST creates a porous structure that reflects the permeability of the surrounding neighborhood. Four compact building volumes stretch along the site boundary toward south, to open as much green space as possible for residents and the wider community. A new public path integrates the ensemble into the larger fabric of Pratteln.

Rather than promoting uniform housing, the tapering geometry naturally generates a variety of apartment sizes and layouts. This spatial diversity allows for flexible living arrangements, such as multigenerational or inclusive housing. Shared spaces between the building volumes encourage daily interaction and serve as places of arrival and social exchange. Every apartment has a direct connection to the garden.
